Variable Fonts

Variable Fonts (variable Schriften) sind OpenType-Schriften, die sich linear interpolieren lassen. Eine solche Schrift besteht aus einer einzigen Datei, aus der Software verschiedene Strichstärken, Breiten und Schriftlagen berechnen kann – wo bisher für eine Schriftfamilie mehrere Dateien nötig waren. Initiiert wurde das Format von Apple, Adobe, Google und Microsoft.

Variable fonts are OpenType fonts that can be linearly interpolated. Such a font consists of a single file from which software can calculate different weights, widths and slopes – where a type family previously required several files. The format was initiated by Apple, Adobe, Google and Microsoft.
